Quality of Life: Social Wellbeing - Community Involvement, Acceptance and Support
Dit blog gaat over de schoonheids idealen. Dit hoort bij dit deel van QoL omdat het overal anders wordt gezien, per land of cultuur.

Quality of Life: Emotional Wellbeing - Positive Affect

Rick Owens' dicks

Rick Owens showed some balls during his fashion show ‘menswear Fall/Winter 2015’ in Paris the 22th of January. Rick loves to push the boundaries, the designer sent four of this models down the runway with peepholes. These peepholes showed their male nudity underneath.

What?

Richard Saturnino Owens, known as Rick Owens, is an American fashion designer. He has one of the most progressive profession these is now-a-days. Through his show he wanted to illustrate a point and he wanted to show a graceful world which was free of shame and fear. The designer suffered from shame and fear in his youth, because of this he wants to process as much as possible loving energy in his designs. Owens responded to the controversy that arose after he sent the models down the catwalk by sending an email to ‘Women’s wear daily’. “I pass classical marble statues of nude and draped figures in the park every day, and they are a vision of sensuality — yes, but also of grace and freedom”.

Why?

We, people, barely raise our eyebrows. Who hasn’t seen exposed nipples, naked bottoms or breasts? Probably everybody has seen it. Sex sells, that is a fact. So why was there commotion about the nude male genitals? Censorship and gender equality are a constant issue of today and Owens made a statement with his show about this problem.

This fashion show in Paris created degeneration and that was exactly what Rick Owens referred to. This show took us to another world, free for imagination. It showed a mix of impossible glamour, fantasy, wealth, transvestism and androgyny. But in the real world you can constantly show your penis even on a catwalk in Paris. See the video below for the show:

Björk, it is more than just music

In a press release The New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) let know there will be an exhibit, from 7 March to 7 June, which will show all aspects of the career of the Icelandic singer Björk. Besides her music there is much more on the agenda, including collaborations with filmmakers, photographers and collaboration with fashion designers will be extensively discussed.

What is it?

Björk was the former lead singer of the alternative rock band The Sugarcubes, but since 1993 she is having a solocarrier under the name Bjork. She is seen as a strong independent woman and also she inspired many people with her style and her music. The highly experimental exhibition about her work will touch the audience in an impressive way.

Why is it cool?

Everything Björk does is very unique. Whenever she wears the clothes of a fashion designer, such as with Alexander McQueen, it seems more like a collaboration than just simply putting on the designers clothes. The exhibition will not just be a cheesy exhibition, it will provide an experience for the visitors. Trough sounds, film, visuals, instruments, object, costumes her carrier will be showed. All this will present both biographical and imaginatively fictitious written by writer Sjón and co-written by Björk. They also collaborate with video directors.

Björks exhibition will not only be about her music, but about many more thing that went on in her carrier. The extraordinarily artist had had a major impact on her generation worldwide and the exhibition offers visitors an experience of her work. Got curious? Don’t hesitate and visit: www.moma.org for more information.

Make-up, it came out of the blue!

Most women, and probably even men to, identify their selves with make-up. This is not just a way to stand out in everyday life, it is also a part of the entertainment industry. For example in theaters. It can take a lot of time, energy and money to transform an actor into a character, because make-up will fade. There is a new technology, it can change make-up on the spot without any effort.

What?

Nobumichi Asai, producer and technical director for P.I.C.S. He made a living canvas with digital make-up. In the video below you can see a serie of visuals, these are projected on the models’ face. It is a motion capture technology which precisely scans the womans’ face, then through projection mapping there are shown different of masks on her face. These masks are projected on the contours of her face, this means she can move and wear the masks at the same time. There are all kinds of projection from traditional make-up, such as eyeliner and rouge, to a full-on cyborg. In the movie this cyborg even opens up and it shows the inside of the robot head.

Why?

This kind of make-up would be perfect for in theater and live-performance, this will even make a show more memorable for the viewers. But it is also new and innovative way of expressing for an actor and it will provide less stress behind the scenes. But one the most important things, it will give an experience to visitors and to the people working with this great way of identification.

Who does not dream to see a real-time show with fantastic characters, where anything is possible! If this technique was used for musicals or in any other show, people would be blown away! If you are curious about projection mapping, or any other fantastic work of Nobumichi Asai’s you should take a look on his website: http://www.nobumichiasai.com/

Perfect 'shopped' looks #her

There has always been speculations about the ideal beauty. But what is it? What does it look like? I personally think that this cannot be determined. But there are a number of interesting project about this issue. For example the work of Esther Honig. The journalist who was photoshopped all over the world.

What

Who is Esther Honig and what did she do? She is ajournalist proved via photoshop the ideal beauty varies by country and culture. For her research “Before & After” she used her own profile picture and had it photoshopped in 25 different countries. The only instruction she gave was: “Make me beautiful”. This study clearly shows the trend “Roots & Wings, Shifting Identities” because the ideal varies by culture and country. All pictures were added, some more than others. The entire series can be found at http://www.estherhonig.com/.

Why

Esther Honing showed in an innovative way how different cultures think about beauty. Photoshop has been well known all over the world. Companies and celebrities are using it all the time. There are several groups taking action against photoshop. But in the future I do not see any changes coming in the industry or with celebrities. It is fun and interesting to see how cultures think about beauty, but it will probably nog improve someone’s  quality of life. Or maybe it will when you look close to ‘perfect’.

http://www.estherhonig.com/
Conclusion

It is clear the ideal of beauty is viewed from different perspectives from each person, but also by country of culture. This project, which is all based on the ideal of beauty, is about the different standards. But the results are very similar to each other: there is no example for what beauty really is and beauty standards aren’t permanent.

Protective Underwear #her

Julia Veldhuijzen van Zanten noticed in her immediate environment people had incontinence problems and they tend to isolate themselves because of insecurities and fears. A practical solution such as an incontinence diaper is not good for their confidence. Also the diapers are not comfortable and not sustainable. Julia made her thesis project “The protective Underwear” for the Design Academy Eindhoven in the TextielLab in Tilburg.

What?

She came up with the product, for this she collaborated with the company Artofil, this is a high performance technical textiles company. The Protective Underwear is a knitted brief made of wool and silk. It is combined with a removable incontinention textiel made from yarn and absorbent microfiber. It is comfortable to wear and washable. It is a durable product it can be washed an re-used. Julia was inspired by her elderly grandparents and the elderly population in general. It is not comfortable to go out or to feel confident about yourself when having a bladder control problem.

Why?

The brief offers a solution for people who experience incontinence problems, but who do not want to wear a uncomfortable diaper or isolate themselves. By wearing underwear that is comfortable and which looks much better than a diaper there is less fear or uncertainty for the wearer. This a microtrend, a product, which fits the trend 'Age Elasticity' very well. The elderly still want to be young and a incontinentdaiper doesn't help them. But with these briefs on it will make them feel like they are not even having this problem. Because of the aging this product has a good future growth potential and it is a good way to deal with incontinent problems with insecurities . Julia also won the “New Material Award” with her textiles.
